Shed Buying Guide
Buying your first storage building? Here is what to think about: size, style, where it will sit, and what happens on delivery day.
1. Pick the right size
Tools & push mower
8x10 to 8x12. A utility shed or mini barn works well.
Riding mower & yard gear
10x12 to 12x16 with double doors. A lofted barn keeps the floor clear.
Car, truck or side-by-side
12x20 and up. See the portable garage and lofted garage.
Office, studio or cabin
A studio shed or cabin with windows and a porch.
2. Choose a spot
- Fairly level ground with good drainage.
- Room for the doors to open and for you to walk around it.
- A clear path for delivery, a few feet wider than the building.
- Check your property lines, setbacks and any HOA rules.
3. Check permits
Rules change from place to place. Call your town or county building office and ask about a portable accessory building of your size.
4. Decide how to pay
Pay cash, or choose rent-to-own for 36, 48 or 60 months with no credit check. See every price on our shed prices page.
5. Delivery day
Free delivery to most local areas, and we deliver almost anywhere. We set the building on your spot. Check your zip code.
Questions
Do I need a permit for a shed?
It depends on where you live. Many places do not need one for a portable building on skids, but some do. Call your town or county building office before delivery day.
Do I need a concrete pad?
No. Hallmark buildings sit on treated skids. A level gravel pad helps the building sit level and drain, but it is not required.
How much room does delivery need?
A clear, fairly level path a few feet wider than the building, with no low wires or branches. Tell us about tight spots and we will plan for them.
What size shed do I need?
For a push mower and tools, 8x10 or 8x12. For a riding mower, 10x12 or larger with double doors. For a car or side-by-side, look at a 12x20 or bigger portable garage.
